#StopGalamsey is a fight against illegal mining, also known as Galamsey. With the launch of the campaign in April 2017, the Media Coalition Against Galamsey (MCAG) hereinafter referred to as the Coalition or MCAG leads this fight to raise awareness of the menace which is slowly ravaging water bodies and the environment.
Objectives of MCAG
The Coalition seeks to carry out public education on the ills of illegal mining activities; carry out advocacy with stakeholders to ensure the eradication of galamsey and to promote sustainable mining.
The Coalition's Steering Committee is made up of representatives from the general membership to manage the affairs of the Coalition. The Steering Committee is headed by a Convenor, Co-Convenor and an Administrator who will are officers for the Coalition during its lifetime
Other members of the Steering Committee include media partners such as the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA), Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL), New Times Corporation (NTC), Private Newspaper Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG), Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Ghana News Agency (GNA), Ghana Community Radio Network (GCRN) and Penplusbytes. The Steering Committee streamlines the activities of the Coalition in order to ensure a sustained fight against illegal mining.
Membership of the Coalition is open to all media institutions and associations, be they print, electronic or digital media. Membership shall imply acceptance of the rules and regulations as shall be provided to guide the activities of the Coalition. Organizations which do not otherwise qualify to be members but who contribute substantially to the achievement of any of the objectives of MCAG, shall be admitted as honorary or affiliate members or partners.
The activities of the coalition is sponsored by STAR-Ghana: a donor pooled funding organization and has collaborations with Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) , Ministry of Lands & Natural Resources, Inter-Ministerial Committee on Mining, Ministry of Information, NCCE, Muslim Community, Christian Churches, GOIL, Ernst & Young, Ghana Law School, Occupy Ghana, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)/Water Research Institute (WRI), International Association for Impact Assessment IAIA among others.
